Add this to your Roost

You should know: I live in a small apartment. I'm a kitchen designer and I don't have any base cabinets larger than 12" wide. So, I'm always on the lookout for great products to make a small space a little bit more practical.

Allow me to introduce to you: DrawerDecor

DrawerDecor is a pretty sweet little deal. Here's how it works:

The rubber base mat comes in a large sheet and can be easily cut to fit into any size drawer. You don't even have to worry about cutting in a straight line, they put a handy grid on it.
Arrange your utensils on the drawer and secure them with the rubber dividers, or Divitz. The Divitz adhere to the mat without any type of adhesive and are totally re-positionable!  You can take everything out and give it a wash whenever you feel like it.

Voila! No more utensils rolling around in the drawer. The sky's the limit on these puppies. I use mine to keep my silverware in check since my drawers are too small for standard size dividers. Use them in your office or put them in your toolbox.

Best of all - they come in lots of great colors including sky blue, red, orange, lime green and lilac.

A starter kit goes for $24.99 and includes a base mat, 5 large Divitz, 5 small Divitz, and 5 T Divitz.

Simple Rules for Colorful Spaces- Issue 1

There are endless ways to incorporate color into a room. But, more on that later.

What if you want a room that has multiple colors? Say you like moss green, but you also like yellow and camel brown. The thought of incorporating all of these colors might seem daunting. Do you split them equally around the room? Do you purchase all the furniture in one color, paint the walls one color, and buy flooring the color of the third? Maybe you could do 90% of one and use the other two minimally.

While any of those can work if planned very carefully, designers have a trick to this problem. The best colorful rooms follow one simple rule that's super easy to remember. Split your colors roughly 60%-30%-10%. Don't like numbers?

It gets even easier. Picture your room colors as the parts of a man's suit- jacket/pants, shirt, tie. Divide your colors accordingly. You main color is the jacket and pants (60%), secondary color is the shirt (30%) and accent color is the fun tie (10%).

This is a great example from the May 2011 edition of Elle Decor (see sources below).
The designer of this room incorporated the 'suit' principle when applying the color choices to this room.

Go ahead! Go impress your friends.

Welcome to Roost!

You've discovered the ground floor of what will become your new favorite design blog.

Let me introduce myself!
I'm Jayme. I have a bachelor's in interior design and currently work as a kitchen & bath designer. There's so much to see and learn about in the world of design. It can be overwhelming for me, so I imagine it's overwhelming for you, too. This blog will be my way of guiding you through the design industry in a practical way that you can actually apply at home. There will be no 24-hour renovations, crazy do-it-yourself projects or featured rooms that are totally unattainable to the typical homeowner (read: no indoor pools or $10,000 chaise lounges).

Here's what you can expect as Roost grows:
-Real articles (by yours truly) giving you quick tips or secrets that designers use to create great spaces
-Guides to what you need to know when buying anything from flooring to appliances
-Inspiration boards with real shopping guides
-Shopping guides with products you can actually buy in stores or online...no more 'call for pricing' or 'to the trade only'. If something to the trade is featured, it's only because it was SO cool that I just HAD to share
-Critical looks at what makes successful rooms work
-Fun products from around the industry that just need to be shared

If you're having a design dilemma or found something fun, feel free to give me a shout! I'd be happy to answer your question on the blog or share your finds!

Keep checking back often! The blog will grow quickly!
